The Bookworm

-->
What is this young lady doing? What else but looking  at the array of books in a bookshelf. This young lady is the big girl in my earlier post titled, Some of My Treasures. This young lady is crazy about books and computers, like her auntie.  Looks like it runs in the family you say? Yes, of course. She is cute, too. Ahem! Told you, it runs in the family. I took this photo inside a bookstore in Alabang Muntinlupa City, Philippines. This was last Sept 2010, at our quick stop on our way home. She immediately took charge by browsing some books when we were inside the bookstore. Later, I guess she figured out she has other books to read at home. She resisted the temptation of taking one book to the cashier.

There is a popular theory of language acquisition called "schema" theory. Schema is an organized pattern of thought or behavior.  As children develop separate schemata for experiences they acquire. They apply these experiences in their growing years and in their adulthood. Literacy in language helped to express these schematic experiences in a form of both verbal and written communications. Books are good source of vocabularies and general knowledge. Non readers do not develop their reasoning skills and are simply dependent on intuitions. Their levels of communications are more on vernacular levels. Children who are wide readers become more literate and well rounded. Children who are good readers develop more self confidence. They know they could express themselves well.

Well done for supporting and encouraging your family to read, if only more people would do this.
I miss good book stores, Jakarta simply does not have any

I love a trip to the bookstore. I stay there longer than I'm supposed to!

I agree, my youngest son is not only a budding writer but he also loves to read books! :)

@Sudhi- Thank you my dear. She looks more like me than her mom. Hush... do not tell my sis, okay. (lol) @Luke- It is nice to see your smiling face again my friend. Yes, we have several bookstores in the Philippines. But books are quite expensive. @Melanie- Love your post about you and your boys reading books. :)

Reading and being read to is so important especially young children. I wonder how long book shops will continue for as it seems online reading is taking over.

@Toyin O. @WebbieLady- Welcome to my blog ladies. Nice to see you around. ♥ @Ryan-Right on that internet reading my friend. A bookstore in Manila found a way they could entice readers. They have small cafe inside the bookstore. You could also read a book of your choice inside the bookstore at a designated reading area.

Hello Jolly Princess, love your blog and your positive outlook at life.
Wayyyy to go, Lady!
And I certainly admire your stylish eloquence.

Notice you in Manila....
Incidentally I love the Tinikling dance, and one of my favourite songs is 'Dahil sayo'. Though I can't speak the language, but know the meaning, 'Because of you', right? Its a beautiful song.

Salamat, manatiling bata, at laging maganda! Isang masayang araw ang nawa'y sumayo.
Laging magtabi ng awit sa iyong puso.
Ingat ka palagi, Lee.
ps, hope my Tagolog passed, ha ha.

I have always favored the concept of schema.

It is true that people who read more are literate--they are able to express their thoughts a bit accurately, and they comprehend complex ideas/meanings. However, it depends if the person learns from actually reading books and knows how to wield the information/knowledge he or she gains.

I am sorry about your mother (I wish I could of read your posts sooner).

Thanks for sharing!

I know I am not a bookworm type but i do read 2-3 books a month. Its an only option for me when there is no TV reception at my working place.

Jolly, I LOVE to read, but don't have room for lots of books. I like to check out the book stores, then order the books from the library. I'm gonna go do that now!

Jolly Princess said...

@Zezebel- Not much into TV because I do not have cable at home. Reading is one hobby I cannot set aside like my blogging, @Jill Wellington- My niece dreams of having her own library in the future. She has a drawer full of books at home. :)

My blog list. What they are blogging about. ♥
